Further Information and Frequently Asked Questions:
- Do J-struts have a similar height and load capacity compared to a normal acrow?
The Size 1 J-strut follows the conventional sizing (established by Acrow Engineers nearly a century ago). Unlike typical alternatives, J-struts comprise a superior tube construction which means the Size 1 can safely support 32kN when fully closed (175cm) and 19kN when fully extended (310cm), provided that the prop is loaded concentrically and max 1.5 degrees out-of-plumb. The user guide, linked below, contains further guidance on the safe working envelope and standard operating procedures.
- Is it possible to upgrade existing acrow props?
Modifying existing props is inherently unsafe - there's simply too much variation in tube construction. Not only is it impossible to specify a safe load capacity, but a retrofitted component might seem to fit initially then later fail under load. Instead, we manufacture and assemble our props from scratch, ensuring that the final product has full traceability and meets rigorous safety standards. This means that J-struts are of the highest quality with exceptional functionality and well-defined load capacity.
- Why choose J-struts when conventional props are usually cheaper?
To deliver improved safety and performance, J-struts have a slightly higher upfront cost compared to typical props. However, it's essential to understand that this represents an investment in quality and traceability as much as improved safety and performance. Crafted from high-grade steel, J-struts are built to outlast and outperform conventional alternatives with precision-engineered components that are fully traceable and finished with a variety of high-spec protective coatings. On top of their superior construction, J-struts have three key the key operational advantages, they are:
Quicker: Not only are they height adjustable in a matter of seconds, they can be positioned, adjusted and held plumb by 1 person, reducing in labour-hours by over 50%.
Safer: J-struts eliminate risks and mitigate hazards that are inherent with typical acrows. Say goodbye to repetitive strain injuries, bruised knuckles, pinched fingers, and skin punctures from frayed wires.
Easier: By applying a modern twist to a century-old method, J-struts enables effortless control and precise adjustment at the press of a trigger.
- How much added value do J-struts bring to construction projects?
The award-winning telescopic steel props are typically used in temporary structural and formwork applications. They have proven to be highly effective in reducing time and labour costs on construction and renovation projects by reducing manual labour and improving resource efficiency on prop setup by approximately 50%. Assuming an average hourly wage of £20 for UK construction workers, this translates to a labour cost saving of £10 per hour worked. Considering the indirect benefits of reduced injury risk and improved morale, we estimate a conservative 20% overall increase in Gross Value Add (GVA) per hour worked.
Before: Assuming the average GVA per hour worked in the UK construction industry is £40
After: Based on the estimated 20% increase in productivity after switching to J-strut, the forecasted GVA per hour worked would be: £48 (current GVA of £40 * 1.20 i.e. 20% increase).
- Where are J-struts available to purchase and can they be hired?
We can supply J-struts to UK customers with next day delivery if ordered before 10am. They can also be purchased from other online retailers and builders merchants. We currently stock the most common prop size, Size 1, with other sizes available on backorder.
We have a network of hire partners dotted around the UK. If you would like to hire J-struts we recommend asking your local hire depot for stock availability. For other hire enquiries please contact us directly using the form below.
